Electric narrowboat buyer guide

Electric Narrowboat Costs and Running Costs.

Understand purchase price, batteries, solar, charging and the everyday costs that shape electric narrowboat ownership.

Current Oakums prices

New electric narrowboats from £145,000.

The starting price includes the standard specification for the selected range. Optional equipment and individually configured systems change the final price.

What changes the price?

The system has to suit the way you cruise.

Battery capacity, motor choice, charging equipment, solar generation and domestic demand should be considered together.

Propulsion

Motor, controller, propeller and installation must suit the hull and cruising duty.

Energy storage

More lithium capacity increases usable energy but should be justified by genuine demand.

Charging

Solar, shoreline and generator provision determine how the battery bank is replenished.

Running costs

There is no single meaningful annual figure.

The cost depends on how far the boat cruises, where it charges, its solar yield, whether a generator is used and how much energy life aboard consumes. Shoreline tariffs and mooring arrangements also vary.

Electric propulsion removes routine diesel-engine servicing from the propulsion system, but batteries, cooling, controls, connections, solar equipment and any generator still require inspection and maintenance.
